The Materials and molecules from plants team is an expert in the valorization of plant biomasses and co-products of transformation processes in the form of bioproducts. The biomasses studied are mainly tropical and temperate woods, natural rubber and transformation co-products. Our research issues are the characterization of the properties of interest of the biomasses, the improvement of the knowledge of the physico-chemical mechanisms involved during the transformation and the influence of the properties of the raw materials, the construction of paths of sustainable valorization of the biomass and the development of methods of multicriteria analysis of the production systems.

Our actions are based on equipment and testing devices specific to each field of expertise (process engineering, materials science, chemistry and biochemistry, environmental assessment). According to the needs of the operators of the sectors in France and in the producing countries, we propose services of analysis, technical expertise, training but also collaborative research projects.

Our research

  • Valorization of plant biomasses in southern countries in the form of bioproducts: solid materials, composite materials, and molecules
  • Valorization of co-products of transformation processes
  • Development of sustainable transformation channels

Our mission

  • Characterization of the properties of interest of biomasses, their variability, and the evolution of this variability, and identification of the factors of influence of this variability
  • Improvement of the knowledge of the physico-chemical mechanisms involved in the transformation process
  • Influence of the properties of raw materials and operating conditions on the quality of the products obtained
  • Construction of viable and sustainable biomass valorization paths
  • Development of methods for multi-criteria analysis of value chains

Our expertise

  • Anatomical identification of tropical and temperate woods
  • Characterization of the technological behavior of wood species (natural forest, plantation, or agroforestry) in order to determine their potential use
  • Technical assistance for the implementation of tropical and temperate woods
  • Advice on the organization of wood supply and competitiveness of tropical forest products
  • Characterization of the biochemical composition (lipid, proteins, minerals), the structure (macromolecular structure and gels, studies of latex particles), the properties of use of rubber and latex
  • Studies of the factors influencing the quality of natural rubber (agronomic, post-harvest and processing)
  • Standardization and certification of natural rubber (reference laboratory, International Rubber Association)
