Impact in Malaysia

Since 2009, BioWooEB research unit collaborates closely with the Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products from Universiti Putra Malaysia, near Kuala Lumpur. Last month INTROP has been awarded the prestigious status of HICOE - “Higher Institution Centre of Excellence”.

This award is a Malaysian national recognition which is given to only 16 research institutions in the country. Exigent criteria should be met to get it and to keep it, in competition with all research institutions of Malaysia. The status comes with a sizeable budget top-up, and with the responsibility to do even better: it is put back into play every three years.

We conveys our warmest congratulations to INTROP director Prof. Dr Paridah Md. Tahir and to all UPM colleagues.

Such a success validates BioWooEB's choice, a few years ago, to identify UPM and INTROP as one of the most dynamic and promising academic partner in the Malaysian landscape. Together Cirad and UPM developed a Center of Excellence on Biomass Valorisation within INTROP. This cooperation is very active, with activities on biofuel from ligno-cellulosic residues, on biomass for bioenergy monetisation and Haze mitigation, and on financialisation of agriculture and forestry.

This cooperation also offers an interesting platform of international  capacity building. Many students of master level and different origins participate to the various projects every year, and currently 4 Phd students from Malaysia, Costa Rica and France are supervised or co-supervised.
