Tropical Timber Atlas

Last update: 16 May 2022

The Tropical Timber Atlas presents the main technological features of 283 tropical and 17 temperate of the most popular forest species in Europe along with their main end-uses. The operators of the wood industry will be the main users, whether producers or consumers. This book is a reference tool for teaching and training on the tropical forest and wood domain.

This book has been produced by the Wood team of CIRAD's BioWooEB Research Unit, thanks to the financial support of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and with the support of the International Technical Association of Tropical Timber (ATIBT). It is the result of 30 years of research work in wood science technology provided by many contributors. It is coordinated with the Tropix software, also edited by CIRAD.

The Tropical Timber Atlas presents technological information on wood for all professionals who process and use temperate or tropical woods. It brings together the main technological characteristics of 283 tropical and 17 temperate wood species, the most used in Europe, associated with their main end-uses. Each descriptive sheet is illustrated by 2 photos of flow (dosse or quarter, false quarter), 2 macrophotographies, and for some species an illustration of use.

Wood sector operators will be the main users, whether producers (forest managers, logging companies, policy makers) or consumers (importers, traders, processors, users, architects, project managers, masters of work). This Atlas is a reference tool for teaching and training in the tropical forest and wood sectors. It aims to promote the most appropriate uses for each species according to its characteristics, respecting the adage "the right wood in the right place".
